Todorov Narrative Theory

Tzvetan Todorov was born on 1st March 1939 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He is the man who invented the ‘Todorov’s Narrative Theory’. In this theory of his, he created diagram (left side) that included 5 steps, which summed up what most movie’s stories included.

1.      Equilibrium: In this stage, everyone is happy and in peace; nothing goes wrong.
2.     Disruption of the Equilibrium: This is where the peaceful life of the protagonist is being interrupted by someone mostly antagonist.
3.     Recognition of the disruption: The protagonist comes to realise how bad of a situation he/she is in.
4.     An attempt to repair the damage: In the fourth stage, after realising the problem the protagonist tries to solve the problem he/she is faced with.

5.     New Equilibrium: This is the final stage of the ‘Todorov’s Narrative Theory’, it is where the problem is solved and everyone lives happily ever after.
