Poster Analysis: Dead Silence

As you can see from the poster, there is a wooden puppet which suggests us that it is the antagonist. By looking at the gesture and facial expression you can say that the genre of this movie is horror/thriller/mystery. The gesture of the hand (shushing) makes us feel as if this movie will have some secret/mystery which will link back to the wooden puppet’s dark past of becoming an evil spirit. In most thriller movies dolls/puppets are used to symbolize
how evil spirit possess the doll especially the ancient looking one. The facial expression is creepy as it is staring right at the audience with a sly smile on its face. This makes it look as if it is telling the audience to keep quiet about the horrendous things it has done or is going to do. The main character is defiantly portrayed as an enigma as it’s a doll, which means that its facial expression will be the same no matter what, therefor this character looks mysterious. This proposes us throughout the movie the audience won’t be able to recognize what the antagonist is planning to/how its feeling.  The poster is composed really simply with only an image with its blurry title and actor’s names. The blurry title makes the poster have some eerie atmosphere with links with the main image in the poster
In my opinion, the target audience will definitely be teenagers or anyone who enjoy having to go through the excitement and thrill of watching thriller movies. Furthermore, the colours that has been used in this poster are dark colours such as black which signifies darkness and evil and also red for death, danger and destruction. Then we have quite a bright lighting on the doll’s face making it look ghoulish. The most important colour in this poster is black because if the background didn’t contain black colour than the main image of the poster wouldn’t have the devilish look. The colours are certainly linked with the genre as it gives off the horror atmosphere to the poster. The image is located right at the middle of the poster to catch the audience’s attention and since the image is staring right back at the audience, as a result it makes them feel intimidated and possibly make them watch the movie.
